In general, most chips can be repaired but it always depends on four factors: size, type, depth and location of the damage. A qualified windscreen repair technician evaluates a number of factors before deciding whether a windscreen is repairable. Each case is assessed on an individual basis and a determination is made based on the technician’s evaluation.
We can confidently repair chips up to the size of a R2 coin. If possible we need some basic information such as the size of the chip and its position when you contact us. We offer a one year warranty on our workmanship and all materials used.
The following damages are considered impossible to repair:
- on the inside of the windscreen.
- deep damage on both the inner and outer glass layer.
- damages over the rain sensor.
- complex multiple cracks.
- long cracks over 15cm in length.
In any of the above mentioned scenarios a windscreen replacement is recommended.
Provided the chip has been assessed to be repairable, then yes it is safe. After your windscreen is repaired, it will be restored to its full structural strength and you will be able to drive your car immediately or even wash it. Only a faint mark at the point of impact will be left.
A repair is best in situations where:
- the damage is recent.
- the point of impact is relatively small.
- the cracks around the damaged area are minimal.
Remember if you spot a chip or crack on your windscreen its important to get it fixed quickly. Bumps on the road, cold nights and hot days can quickly turn a simple repair job into a full replacement.
Whilst you wait to have a chip repaired its important to keep the vehicle under a shade or leave windows slightly open, provided its safe to do so. This prevents hot air from building up inside causing further cracking.
Never attempt to use glue to fill a stone chip or a crack. Glue is brittle when hardened, unlike resin which remains flexible. It simply does not work and may render it impossible to repair a windscreen.
